Love Is In the Air and on the Page

Hello chérie! With Valentine’s day just around the corner, today's post is all about a genre that's near and dear to many hearts: romance novels. Now as some of you may know from reading my XYX post, I am a mystery reader, but I’ve decided to take a little break and explore the romance genre. I started by buying some contemporary romance but soon discovered some interesting sub-genres, historical, cowboy, mafia…

So let's dive into the world of swoon-worthy stories, heart-fluttering moments, and happily-ever-afters.

The Romance Readership: By the Numbers

According to industry statistics, romance fiction is the highest earning genre in publishing bringing in over $1.4 billion in revenue. Crazy when you consider the misconceptions that surround the genre. People love to hate on this genre but it really drives the business.

Not only is it the highest revenue driver of any other genre, it also continues to see growth (52% increase in 2023 from year prior).

Who's Reading Romance?

While romance can appeal to a broad audience, there are some common demographic traits among romance readers:

  • Predominantly Female:  82% romance readers are women.

  • Broader Age Range: Though the average age of a romance reader is 42, they are getting younger. Ten years ago, the average age range for romance readers was 35-54, today it is 18-54.

  • Reader Diversity:  Romance readers are predominately white (73%), followed by African-American (12%), Latino/Hispanic (7%) and Asian/Asian-American (4%).
